Remembering Bataan — “Honoring our Heroes” (Fall ’08 -Spring ’10)

This mural honors the sacrifices of the Bataan Death March participants from Grant County, and is located at the Bataan Memorial Park in Santa Clara, NM. Two survivors of the march gave students oral histories and their recollections of the horrors involved. Robert Benfield’s history class helped the art class with research, including a trip to the Silver City Museum where students worked with museum director Susan Berry to explore articles & oral histories about the Bataan Death March archived at the museum. Cobre High School students from Sara Pineda’s art class worked with local artist Karen Carr and various artists from her studio, to create a bulletin board of photos of the soldiers and press releases from newspapers at the time of the conflict. The use of the bulletin board motif echoes the community boards where family and friends waited for information about their missing loved ones.
